Stories

Doris

Doris, a student from Hong Kong, started her advocation journey with QED in Year 5. She wondered what schools she should apply for and how big she might dream in making her future plans. Sophie, her QED instructor, began with a detailed assessment to inform Doris's bespoke tuition plan. The assessment—a key component of QED's initial evaluation—provided a comprehensive understanding of Doris's academic level, strengths and weaknesses, personal hobbies and other qualities to help chart a clear course toward her goals.

Once a course plan was mutually agreed, two advocates—Roger (a former Head of Maths) and Helen (Former Headmistress of Bute House)—taught Doris mathematics and English directly. They have both noted an improvement in the speed and accuracy of Doris' mathematical ability, alongside a systematic strengthening of her English reading analysis and writing skills.

At the beginning of the new year (in 2022), Doris received offers from three top girls' schools: Wycombe Abbey, Cheltenham Ladies' College and City of London School for Girls. She begins her new journey at Wycombe Abbey this September.

Krystal

Krystal is a music major who has studied piano since childhood and hoped to enter one of the top music schools in the UK. She turned to QED for support in reaching this dream.

Edward, Head of the Department of Music at the University of Cambridge and Krystal's personal QED advocate, provided an assessment of her skills and opportunities for improvement. Based on the assessment result, QED assembled subject teachers to strengthen her academic and music foundation.

Working together, the teaching team has propelled Krystal to new heights. She has now successfully conquered the entrance process for longest and most famous music school in the UK, The Percell School, and realized the first step of her dream.

Alice

Alice came to the UK in Year 7 but found the transition difficult due to language barriers and difficulty making friends in a new culture.

In order to boost her confidence and help her regain enthusiasm for her studies, QED aided Alice in a transition to St George's School Windsor Castle, which provided a warm environment and better match with Alice's talent and personality.

This step proved to be quite significant for Alice, and the QED team noticed gradual—yet significant—improvements in confidence. As Alice grew more comfortable, QED engaged her in additional tuition. Her QED teacher focused on helping Alice to truly understand material, not just memorise facts. In conjunction with regular evaluation and reporting, this advocation allowed Alice and her parents to have a very clear picture of her learning progress and plan.

This work culminated in excellence: Alice stood out in the 13+ Exam and won offers from every senior school to which she applied: Epsom, Badminton School and City of London Freemen's School.

Hank

When Hank decided to study abroad, he had already missed the very important 16+ Exam. But with the explicit plan and unremitting efforts of his QED advocates and teachers, he was supported in his effort to gain admittance to a British school. Now, Hank continues his work with QED to reach his next dream: university admittance.

Early in his studies, Hank set his sights on becoming a mathematics major at Imperial College. In order to provide Hank with the greatest chance of success, his QED team have assembled detailed plans for his final year of A-Levels. They work in tandem to ensure that ensuring that Hank's courses link together in a meaningful way and optimise his talents. Walking hand in hand with him, QED is honoured to witness every milestone—and each bit of growth—in the pursuit of his dreams.

Young Scholar:

Judy

Judy attended an international school in China and came to us with a strong science and engineering background but relatively weak confidence in humanities subjects, such as history and English writing.

After participating in QED's English Literature Reading and Creative Writing courses, Judy began to better understand and appreciate English classics. With the teachers' in-depth knowledge of famous masterpieces, Judy opened a door. Gradually, she could analyse classics from different angles, and she surprised herself with her newfound enjoyment of writing her thoughts English. Based on her excellence in the 16+ Exam this year, Judy was admitted to St Paul's Girls' School in London, the top independent school in the UK.

Elsa and Lizzie

We were very proud to see two of our students—Elsa, 8, and Lizzie, 9—place in the Children's World Travel Guide Annual Writing Contest in 2021. Elsa placed second (Runner-Up), and Lizzie received a special mention (Special Encouragement Award)!

With "Hope" as its guiding theme, the competition received entries from more than 200 children in over 30 different countries. Judges selected one Champion and two Runners-Up from each age group, alongside six Special Mentions. Among the 12 winners, QED students occupied two seats, a fact which attracted great attention from the competition's organising committee.

Elsa and Lizzie are both fans of the QED Gold Course—English Literature Intensive Reading and Creative Writing. From the first class, they fell in love with the content and its delivery by humorous, knowledgeable teachers. Their writing talents have also been praised, lit up quickly by the teacher's spark and becoming more and more dazzling with every class. After a semester of courses, their writing abilities continue to make them leaders among their peers, and most importantly, they have formed an abiding love of spontaneous writing.

Testimonies:

Since we planned to study in UK, QED supported us in all areas to help us choose the most suitable school. My son was very satisfied with the school they have chosen, and we have seen my boys growing more independent, confident and optimistic. Many thanks to QED.

When my child transferred to an international school, he couldn't keep up with English at all. After taking one-on-one English classes, he is now the first in the class in listening, reading and writing.
